Making software and software development teams. Mostly the people parts.

About Me

Hi, I'm Jonny O. Technologist, engineer and currently an engineering manager living in Portland, Oregon. I lead and grow software engineering teams. As of Fall 2025 I'm a Senior Manager at Built, a Series D-stage fintech org working on transforming the real estate lifecycle and helping more housing get built in the United States.

My past experience is as a polyglot technology maker and leader: I’ve worked on each phase of the product/market fit continuum. I’ve coded and created an impactful business process management system for the insurance industry and stood up a cross-discipline product development team at a traditional financial planning firm. I've been a Principal Engineer and an EM at one of the largest retail organizations in the world, responsible for architecture and operations of a multi-billion dollar revenue retail app. I've developed an app that helped commodities traders trading millions of dollars in futures improve their performance. And I co-created Tilt Video, a web and mobile app suite that enabled self-guided shooting and editing of promotional videos.

Business Domains I've worked on and am excited about:

  • Retail catalogs & shopping experience including configurable products, dynamic pricing and the Infinite Sku Problem
  • Health: Pharmaceutical drug development pipelines & patient community curation
  • Construction Loan Administration (CLA) and Commercial Real Estate (CRE) pipeline, underwriting and asset management

I like writing and speaking about tech, especially topics such as remote, opportunities in tech (especially non-programming), diversity & inclusion, Latinos in tech, the power of books (such as Accelerate) to move culture, open communications, abundance models, frameworks. Architecture, but a lot of developer experience, workflow, team dynamics, happiness… all the human system concerns that lead to code ownership, high quality and something like ‘10x’ team performance. Relatively recently I’ve spoken at NodePDX and ML4All on data science applications.
